Dubai Municipality Launches Contract Building Activity Using 3D Printing Technology

Dubai Municipality has launched several technical activities centered on 3D printing technology – including building engineering consultancy, construction and ready-mixed concrete casting – in line with Dubai’s 3D printing strategy launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.

In accordance with Executive Order No. 24 of 2021, Dubai Municipality undertakes to develop and implement an integrated system to plan, design and implement construction works using 3D printing technology in accordance with standards and specifications approved engineering.

This is an important step towards strengthening Dubai’s leadership position as the first city in the world to adopt a 3D printing strategy and regulate the use of this cutting-edge technology in the manufacturing sector. construction.

Dawoud Al-Hajri, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Municipality, said: “Dubai Municipality aims to regulate the use of 3D printing technology by organizing and promoting it and providing support and guidance. to startups in the field. This will be in addition to inviting international companies to enter this field in Dubai, as part of our guidelines to make Dubai an international hub for 3D printing business.

“3D printing is a cutting-edge technology that is rapidly advancing in many industries around the world, believed to help reduce costs and lead times. We aim to improve the use of this technology through the new activities launched by Dubai Municipality for contractors and consultants,” he added.

Advantages and objectives

Dubai Municipality’s new activities aim to encourage consultancies, contractors and factories to construct all types of buildings, from start to finish, using 3D printing and AI technology. These activities are accessible to new companies and can also be added to the current activities of design offices, contracting companies and factories. They will directly contribute to the labor market and help in the implementation of this technology, which will lead to an increase in the number of buildings constructed using 3D printing in Dubai.

Registration steps

Interested business owners or licensees can apply for these new activities by registering to practice engineering professions in the Dubai Engineering Qualification System, through the Dubai Municipality website, choosing the name of the activity, then associating the required engineers. The Municipality also provides the names of licensed consultancy firms, contractors, and factories specializing in construction using 3D printing technology through its smart apps in addition to its official website.

In addition, the municipality has established requirements to qualify and classify the issuance of practice licenses for licensed businesses.

The responsibilities of the municipality

According to Decree No. 24 of 2021 relating to the regulation of the use of 3D printing in construction works in the emirate, the Dubai Municipality is responsible for regulating this technology, issuing licenses and monitoring the building works. This will be done by developing and implementing an integrated system to plan, design and execute construction and structural works using 3D printing technology and ensuring its use in accordance with engineering standards and specifications. approved, as well as qualifying, registering and classifying engineers. and entrepreneurs who use 3D printing technology in their work.

His responsibilities also include determining the tests to be carried out on raw materials, synthetic additives, mixtures used in construction works and any other tests to be carried out on the structural components of buildings constructed using printing technology. 3D. The municipality will oversee the creation of a database of construction works implemented in the emirate using 3D printing technology, with a view to facilitating access to data and information necessary for the establishment technical specifications and standards.

The Municipality will also carry out technical studies and experiments and cooperate with research, scientific and engineering entities specialized in this field to develop this technology. It will also prepare model contracts related to 3D printing technology and enter into partnerships with international institutions and specialized design offices to promote the use of this technology and make the most of it.

Dubai Municipality has entered the Guinness Book of World Records for constructing the world’s tallest 3D printed building, which is a two-storey building with a height of 9.5 meters and a total area of 640 meters squares.
